What is separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety, sometimes referred to as isolation distress, is a fear or phobia that your dog experiences when left alone. In some cases it can be more acute and the dog will suffer when his/her primary attachment person is not present, regardless of whether another human is with the dog. Your dog panics when put in this fear inducing situation and it is not something that gets better on it’s own - in fact it typically gets worst.

Separation anxiety is not your dog trying to get back at you for leaving him. They are not trying to be a bad dog or show you who’s boss. Imagine if every day you had to face something that really scared you and you had to do it alone with no help, support or encouragement from anyone. That is what a dog with SA is going through.

While the symptoms may vary between dogs. Some may be vocal, some will pace and whine, others may destroy items, have accidents or cause injury to themselves. Our approach to treating dogs who are suffering with this devastating condition is the same and we have successfully helped many dogs through the process. Let us help you and your dog overcome his anxiety so they can live without the fear and you can live free of the guilt that haunts owners of anxious dogs.

“After seven months of working with Peg, my Jack Russell and I just finished our separation anxiety protocol. I can't lie, I miss Peg's weekly video chat. Not only was she a phenomenal trainer, but she really understood my quirky terrier and all the stress that comes with separation anxiety. Peg helped me work with Posey to minimize her anxiety, and mine too, while teaching Posey that she can stay safely at home alone. It wasn't an easy process, and it took a lot of my time and effort, but having Peg as our trainer and cheerleader brought terrific results. Posey stayed home mostly alone for five hours today, and napped the whole time. Not only is her separation anxiety significantly diminished, but she's an overall less anxious, much happier and more playful dog. My only regret in this process is that Peg and I didn't get to work together in person. I think we would have had a lot of fun.”
